How does AI use at work in Europe compare with the US?

US workers use AI more: in a survey asking the same question in seven countries in early 2026, 43 percent of US workers used generative AI for their job, against 26 to 36 percent in six large European countries, a gap of 7 to 17 points. For companies there is no clean comparison, and US firms that use AI spread it across more of their business.

  • Italy (lowest in Europe) (2026): Italy 25.6%

Why medium confidence: The worker gap rests on one study that asked identical questions in all seven countries, in two waves with the same order. A 47-country survey agrees for the big economies but puts Norway and Denmark at or above the US. The company-level evidence conflicts.

Companies

Do US companies use AI more than European companies?

There is no clean answer. On the one question both official surveys shared in early 2025, AI used to produce goods or services, 7% of US firms said yes against 4% of EU firms. The EIB, which asks firms on both sides the same questions, finds near parity: 37% of EU and 36% of US firms invest in generative AI (2025, weighted by value added). The clearer difference is breadth: 81% of US firms using AI apply it in two or more business areas, against 55% in the EU.

Intensity

Do US workers use AI more intensively than Europeans?

Yes. US workers spent 5.2% of their work hours using generative AI in early 2026, about double the share in the UK (2.8%), Sweden (2.5%) and the Netherlands (2.2%), and more than triple Germany (1.7%), Italy (1.6%) and France (1.5%). About half of the average gap comes from differences in jobs, industries, firm size and demographics.
