Do small firms that use AI see gains?

Most say yes on productivity: 65 to 78 percent of AI-using small firms report that AI raised productivity or employee performance, by their own account and with no size of gain attached. Far fewer report higher sales, about 3 in 10, and almost none report changes in jobs.

  • Scale: % reporting higher productivity. Shaded range: 65–78%.
  • Federal Reserve (2026): 68–78% productivity
  • OECD, seven countries (2025): 65.1% performance

Why medium confidence: Two independent creators with different methods agree on the self-reported share, and two official agencies agree that almost no small firm reports job changes. All the benefit figures are perceptions with no magnitude, and the only causal evidence comes from two trials in special populations that point in different directions.

Jobs and tasks

Do small firms cut jobs because of AI?

Almost none, so far. 96% of AI-using US firms under 50 employees report no change in employment from AI, and AI mostly supports tasks (43 to 45% of small users) rather than taking them over (8 to 11%), according to the Census Bureau. In the UK, about 4% of AI-using firms under 50 employees report a smaller headcount.

Controlled trials Low confidence

What do controlled trials show about small firms and AI?

Few trials exist, and they disagree. In Kenya, 640 small business owners given a GPT-4 business adviser saw no average change in revenue or profit; strong performers gained and weak ones did nearly 10% worse (see F-12). In a trial with 515 early-stage startups, showing founders where other firms use AI led to 1.9 times higher revenue, though only weakly significant, driven by the top tenth of firms, and in a paper not yet peer reviewed.
